direct the work load at an Indianapolis Fleet Services maintenance
facility. To ensure smooth, correct, and continuous repairs to
light and heavy-duty vehicles and specialized equipment.Position
ResponsibilitiesAssign work to technicians, and monitor/review
progress of assignments to ensure they are being completed in a
timely fashion.Identify causes of vehicle breakdowns and
recommended corrective actions.Create work orders and work requests
for vehicles in need of service and prepare an estimate of
repairs.Review work orders for completeness and information
accuracy.Prepare Purchase Orders and/or Requisitions.Inspect
vehicles before, during, and after maintenance has been
performed.Coordinate various repairs with vendors and private
contractors.Coordinate and dispatch wrecker and service
vehicles.Instruct technicians in proper work techniques.Implement a
service quality program, which may include test-driving vehicles to
diagnose problems or to ensure the vehicles proper repair.Identify
training needs and coordinate training for maintenance technicians
at assigned service center.Train technicians in the use,
maintenance, and safety of shop tools and equipment.Maintain a
clean and safe facility.Responsible for training mechanics in the
use of various service manuals, both print and computerized manuals
and other recognized authorities, as well as major manufacturers
training information.Ensure that all employees follow safety
procedures as described in the Employee Safety Handbook and IFS
Policies and Procedures.Responsible for securing garage and all
other related facilities.Responsible for the adherence to the City
of Indianapolis' Policy and Procedure Manual regarding the hiring
and termination of subordinates, planning and scheduling work by
setting priorities and goals, reviewing and evaluating work product
and performance, monitoring progress of work upon completion of
assignments, directing the training of subordinates, and providing
counseling and disciplinary action.Exercises employee discipline
through Disciplinary Schedule and Safety Manual.Perform other
related duties as requested.QualificationsHigh school, G.E.D.
education, or equivalent. Five (5) years of experience in vehicle
repair with one (1) of those years to include supervisory
experience. ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certificate or
equivalent certification preferred. Certification must be obtained
and maintained within eighteen (18) months from date of hire to
retain employment. Must successfully pass a pre-employment
physical. Must obtain and hold a valid CDL-B within 60 days from
date placed into position. Knowledge of mechanical component
systems to include engines, transmissions, drive trains,
suspensions, hydraulics, pneumatic and electrical. Training and/or
experience in diagnostic skills. Ability to apply production and
quality control principles to effectively maintains operations.
Ability to maintain complete and accurate files. Ability to plan,
organize, and effectively direct the work of others. Ability to
write clear, concise reports. Ability to communicate effectively
both orally and in writing. Ability to resolve formal and/or
informal grievances, as well as ensure appropriate and fair
disciplinary action. Ability to operate PC, calculator, two-way
radio, hand tools, drills, etc., and any other job related tool or
equipment. Working knowledge of various Fleet Services information
applications, including, but not limited to CSI-M5, Mitchell on
Demand, Microsoft Windows Outlook, Word, and subsequent versions
thereafter. These are the minimum requirements for this
position.Independent JudgmentActions are controlled through the
application of divisional rules regulations, as well as City
policies and procedures and the law.Independent judgment is
exercised in resolving work problems, directing the work of
subordinates to ensure proper tools, materials and part are
available for an efficient operation, and in handling staff
grievances. Actions and work are subject to review on a spot check
basis by a supervisor who is readily available and provides both
detailed and general instructions.Work is reviewed periodically by
a supervisor who is available as needed to provide general
instructions. However, the incumbent is expected to function with
limited supervision.
